Honoring Bruce Lee on the 40th anniversary of his passing. In many ways, his philosophy informed my teaching. With my students, I was most successful when I was like water, flowing with their guidance on what they needed, when they needed it, and how they needed it. Even though I may have taught the same basic information to five different groups of students, each group required the nuanced art of determining what would work best with them. Current approaches to education obliterate this dynamic and ever-changing relationship between student and teacher. This insistence upon rigid obedience- learning the same thing at the same time in the same way- is wholly unnatural and wrong. This is one reason why it was my choice to flow on to another place and retire. I will not subject myself to oppressive control by those who do not perceive or honor the need for freedom. Walk on.
