How Did The Church Lose Its Bible? Sonny Craig (c) 2014 The rest of the Bible hasnt been written yet. Part of it was written in the past on flax papyri that has long ago turned to dust, like the bandages and corpses of Egyptian mummies. The living Word of God is in the here and now, and the final chapters of the Bible are being written in the lives and the teachings of Jesus disciples. Sonny Craig Clearly you are an epistle of Christ, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, and not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh. 2 Cor. 3:3 _________________________ The picture below is of the oldest existing biblical fragment (of a papyrus codice) on record. It contains seven lines of the Book of John, and is a copy, not an original autograph). This seems to be very stunning to Christians when biblical archeologists dig up fragments of the NT, and it is true that the attestation of the NT and in fact of the rest of the Bible is unprecedented in all of historical literature, and excites me because it usually upends stodgy theological views about the nature of the Bible itself. If it didnt do that, Id hate to think we dont know anymore about the Bible than some guy in the middle ages did. That would suck. The other picture below is of Egyptian Papyrus that is thousands of years older than the Book of John. My, what a difference a Millennium make. Its in better condition, why is that? I cannot help but be stunned that we can have whole codices and papyrus rolls in excellent condition that are considered autographs dating back to the Egyptians well into 2500 b.c. (4500-5000 years ago), and yet not have the originals of the texts of the NT written on the same kind of paper. It seems extremely convenient that the Church has developed a line of explanation that says the autographs of scripture (the NT particularly) are lost, while at the same time maintaining a line of doctrine teaching a closed canon view of biblical inspiration.
