How THIS father dealt with his childs bully.. So this morning, I drop off my 3 and a half year old at school, and as always, I walk her in, kiss her goodbye, tell her to be a good listener, and go have fun as I pat her bottom. This morning, tho, on my way out the door, I turned to get a last look. And I see her standing around 2 girls her age who are sitting and playing. One of them is a girl shes played with and danced with for years; the other is new, and shares a first name with her apparently. As a my child attempted to play/sit with them, I see my child with hands out, palms up as if saying why? and I overhear the new girl say you cant play with us.. youre not our friend.. and the former friend pulls the toy away from her and recites the same line. Then the two girls get up, and take their toys to another corner of the room, leaving my kid there. Well, now Im more unhappy than my kid is.. so I do what I do best.. I go talk to kids. I go sit on the kid-couch next to the book rack, and ask my daughter if she wants to read a book, which she does, and she picks a book, and she sits next to me. And I read out loud, doing character voices of all the animals in the book, like the kids probably never heard it read. And now other kids are coming over to sit on the couch, and look at the pages as I read.. and Im leaving out words so the kids can yell out the words and participate. And more kids are coming over. And now theyre asking if they can sit on my lap. I say, no, only Dani can sit on her papas lap, but if Dani is ok sitting on Pops lap, then therell be more room next to us so everyone can see. And when the book is over and now, like the Pied Piper I have basically every kid in the room crowded around me, and their parents as theyre dropping them off sees me in there..I ask Who wants to pick the next book to read? By now, the two girls whod dissed my child were now in the mix, and the bully (mind you, I do realize shes only 3) is front and center handing me her choice for book to read, I simply say, Oh, sorry, are you one of Danielles friends? I only read to her friends She says yes, and I read her book to the class. And when its over, I pick up my kid, kiss her on the cheek and hug her, and say loud enough for everyone to hear Have a fun day, go play with your friends. Maybe well read more books with everyone tomorrow. And as I put her down, I grabbed her hand, and fitted her with my brass knuckles. Ok.. that last part is untrue.. but the rest is.
