How do crystals work? (Excerpt from Crystals: Simple routines for home, work, & travel, by Christina Rodenbeck) Crystals are some of the simplest and most stable structures in the known universe - this may well be what gives them their power. They are made of repeated patterns of atoms or groups of atoms - molecules - connected together in a strong matrix. Certain unique properties of crystals may explain why they work. First of all, all material is made up of a variety of different types of molecules that come together to create a single entity. For example, you are made up of an incredible variety of molecules that work together to create cells that create your unique self. Even, say, a pot of soil will contain many different types of minerals and vegetables that are jumbled together. Secondly, many crystals - in particular quartz - contain a type of energy called piezoelectricity, which is due to floating positively charged sub-atomic particles trapped in the inner structure of the lattice. Piezoelectricity is released when the crystal is mechanically squeezed or subjected to an electric field - the crystal itself remains unaltered. Piezoelectricity is a result of the crystals very simple basic structure, which may also be the key to how these crystals help us. Sometimes only a very little bit of mechanical intervention can release this energy. Try rubbing a piece of amber and observe the static electricity you have made. This property is used in engineering, for example, quartz watches and radio transmitters. The piezoelectric charge generated using quartz is so precise that it is used to keep Greenwich Mean Time. But most crystals, by contrast, are simply one atom or molecule repeated ad infinitum. This means that on an electromagnetic level, each crystal gives off a single, consistent type of energy. Compare this with yourself - sometimes youre fast, sometimes your slow, sometimes youre asleep, sometimes youre awake. Your mind, body, and spirit work in rhythms and cycles - sometimes not all that consistently either. So a crystal may work as a kind of sub-atomic metronome, giving your body a steady, dependable rhythm to lock into.
