How do we get rid of Labour? There seems to be a great appetite - TopicsExpress

How do we get rid of Labour? There seems to be a great appetite for new parties and for rebranding the SNP. New parties within the Scottish political system would allow the dissemination and expression of all arms of the YES movement, right, left and centre. That can only be good and, given our proportional representation system, would be a feasible and constructive move which could potentially turn Holyrood into a Labour-free zone. However, at a Westminster level, my feeling is that we should stick with the SNP. The first past the post system virtually guarantees that any divided movement will not succeed. It doesnt even need to get as far as the Peoples Front of Judea situation for electoral disaster to ensue: two Independence parties contesting a General Election would simply let the Unionists in. If it were absolutely clear that Tommy Sheridan, the SSP, the Greens or whoever stood the greatest chance of winning a particular seat, then I would be all for the SNP standing aside. In practice, however, I think that scenario unlikely. At UK level we need unity. I also favour the idea of the SNP changing its name. The Unionist media have an easy target with the word National. I, for one, am tired of having to constantly explain the difference between civic and blood-and-soil nationalism. Its just too easy a target. Suggestions Ive seen are Scotland First and Scottish Democracy Party. Neither strikes me as particularly inspiring - perhaps those reading this can come up with a better suggestion.
