How do you expect an official 3 hour marathon pacer to pace a - TopicsExpress

How do you expect an official 3 hour marathon pacer to pace a marathon? I was one of the pacers at Chester last week, and I may well be involved again next year. I am genuinely unsure whether a sub-3 pacer should aim for a very small positive split (1:29/1:31) or run metronomic 6:52 splits from start to finish, so this is a genuine request for opinions or preferences from people whose opinions matter. Should the pacer slow down when climbing hills and speed up on descents? Presumably yes. If the second half is harder (more hills or more head wind), does this change the halfway target? Should the halfway target be communicated, and if so how? If the 3 hour pacer finishes in 3:00:30, have they done as good a job as if they had finished in 2:59:30? Any thoughts welcome. I dont think there are right or wrong answers here, but I wanted to canvass what people *expect* from a 3 hour pacer.
