Mateja Jeger Completes Hat-Trick of Titles, Thanks to Efforts of Dorina Srebrnjak The Junior Girls’ Singles and the Junior Girls’ Doubles titles secured on the second day of play at the Croatian Junior and Cadet Open in Varazdin; the host nation’s 18 year old Mateja Jejer completed the hat-trick on the fourth day of action, Saturday 14th September 2013. She joined forces with Dorina Srebrnjak and Paula Markati to collect the Junior Girls’ Team crown and thus added to her silverware, in what was her farewell junior international tournament on home soil. In 2014 she leaves the junior ranks. Hard Fought Success Success but it was hard fought success for the Croatian trio, the final on the proverbial knife-edge until the very last match of the contest. Furthermore, Mateja Jeger encountered problems. In the very first match of the final against Romania, she was beaten by Adina Diaconu in a tense five games duel, the decision in the crucial fifth game being by the very narrowest of margins (11-7, 12-14, 10-12, 11-8, 12-10). The Rescuer Defeat for Mateja Jeger but to the rescue came Dorina Srebrnjak and Mateja Jeger must offer her compatriot a vote of thanks for her three titles. Dorina Srebrnjak beat Bernadett Balint (11-6, 10-12, 11-4, 11-7) and with the overall match score level at two matches apiece, she accounted for Adina Diaconu in a full distance duel (8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-3). The one remaining win for the champions elect came from Mateja Jeger; in the fourth match of the contest she overcame Bernadett Balint (5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-2) to set the stage for Dorina Srebrnjak to complete the task in hand. The one remaining success for Romania was recorded by Bianca Crisan; in the third match of the fixture, she defeated Paula Markati (11-4, 11-8, 11-6). Testing Semi-Final A hard fought final and for Croatia ‘A’ it was a hard fought semi-final; a three-one win over France was recorded but three of the four matches went the full five games distance. Mainstay of the Croatian win was Mateja Jeger. She beat Oceane Guisnel (11-1, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5) and Camille Campion (6-11, 11-5, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8). The one further success for the hosts was recorded by Dorina Srebrnjak who, as in the final made a most valuable contribution. In the second match of the fixture she accounted for Camille Campion (8-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-8, 11-8). The one success for France came in the third match of the contest, Maeva Causse overcame Paula Markati (11-9, 5-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9). Same Margin A three-one semi-final victory for Croatia, at the same stage it was the same margin of victory for Romania in opposition to Italy. Architect of the success was Bernadett Balint, she beat both Veronica Mosconi (6-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-7, 11-7) and Bianco Bracco (11-6, 8-11, 11-4, 11-4). The one further success was recorded by Adina Diaconu in the second match of the fixture in opposition to Bianca Bracco (11-7, 6-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-2) with the one success for Italy being recorded by Le Thi Hong Loan. In the third match of the encounter, she defeated Bianca Crisan (11-6, 11-8, 11-4). Full Distance Final Victory for Croatia in a hard fought final, in the counterpart Cadet Girls’ Team final it was an equally hard fought contest with the Russian duo of Maria Taylakova and Valeria Shcherbatykh overcoming the Italian partnership of Cristiana Dumitrache and Marcella Delasa by three matches to two. Cristiana Dumitrache gave Italy a fine start by beating Maria Taylakova (11-7, 7-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-8); immediately Russia levelled with Valeria Shcherbatykh overcoming Marcella Delasa in three straight games (11-6, 11-9, 11-6) before the Italian secured the doubles by the very narrowest of margins to move to the precipice of victory (10-12, 11-9, 11-4, 5-11, 12-10). However, the Russians were never pushed over the edge; Valeria Shcherbatykh beat Cristiana Dumitrache (8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8) leaving Maria Taylakova the task of completing the recovery. She duly obliged; she overcame Marcella Delasa in three straight games (11-9, 11-7, 11-8). Road to Final At the quarter-final stage Russia had beaten Croatia ‘A’ (Matea Ombla, Klara Cakol) by three matches to one before recording victory by the same margin against France (Lelli Mostafavi, Lucie Gauthier); whilst Italy had beaten Norway (Rebekka Carlsen, Ilka Doval) three-one and Serbia three-two (Izabella Lupulesku, Sabina Surjan).
