Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - Live at Jazz in Vienne Length: 52 Director: Eric Michaud Producer: Les FIlms Jack Febus Coproducers: France Télévisions & Mezzo Language: Live concert Format: HD Musicians: Smuv, Baji, Yoshi (trumpet) Hudah (trumpet, vocals) Clef, Cid (trombone) Rocco (tuba, vocals) Drow (drums) Programme: Although still unknown in France, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is already enjoying success on the international stage. With its radically modernised second-line inspiration hip-hop, funk, r&b and soul, this combo from Illinois has been gradually (since 1999) establishing itself as the best mini brass band of the moment. In any case, it is certainly the most groovy, the most inspired and the most spectacular on stage. From the suburbs of south Chicago to stages all around the world, with their attention-grabbing collaborations with Mos Def, Damon Albarn, David Byrne, Q-Tip, Madlib, Jay-Z, Maceo Parker, Erykah Badu, Disiz andTony Allen, the eight (sometimes nine, on certain photos…) members of this brassy gang have already set a number of knees trembling. Both measured and boisterous, these eight professionals literally dance with their instruments. They weave a harmonious path between jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop. And their special quality owes a lot to that touch of rap, that urban, contemporary dimension that runs in the veins of the ancient tradition of the brass band. With trumpets, trombone, tuba and an underlying sousaphone (the fascinating Tycho Cohran) in the role of the bass, these eight lads are natural blood brothers. This brass band boosted with a touch of insanity is coming to enchant the audiences in Vienne just as one winter night in 1998 it hypnotised a group of travellers outside a metro station in downtown Chicago.
