I Cried Three Times Today 3. Bri and JJ So when I went to visit my friend, Betty, whom I met on an Internet board, and when her dog escaped and dashed out into traffic, it popped into head that things come in threes, and I hoped my third cry of the day would not come about because my friend’s naughty rescue Shih Tzu had gotten squashed right before my eyes – but fate smiled, nice neighbors stepped in, and the dog was returned to his home live and wiggling. It was when I got home and jumped on Facebook that the shoe finally dropped. My beautiful niece, one of my beautiful nieces, Bri had gotten married yesterday. It broke my heart to miss that Real World reception, but shopping all day had brought on crippling back pain that kept me at home, regretful – missing the real world after all, realizing some things must happen there that cannot happen – well – on Facebook. And it wasn’t just this wedding, but a world of regret for all the times I have not been there for my family, whom I adore, because of – poverty, depression, general untogetherness, and one thing or another – until finally I had put off shopping until too late and missed something I couldn’t really bear to miss. I mean – of course I had nothing to wear to a wedding. That is why I’m a Unitarian – THEY don’t care if you come in jeans, and those few in the congregation who actually believe in God don’t believe in one who cares what you wear. This slackness, while homey, finally caught up with me. But on Facebook, I kept getting these hints of the wedding. Brianna radiant and grownup between her parents. Bri and JJ outside the temple. LOVE the dress. But this is the one that made me cry. My brother, David, posted this: I told Brianna last night at her wedding reception as I started my daddy-daughter dance with her that the goal was for me not to cry. But this is the song she chose for us to dance to... yeah, she pretty effectively put a bullet to the head of *that* goal.
