I THINK . . . . . . this episode of Bill Maher is probably the best Ive seen in a couple of years. Its soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sad that the whole thing cant be posted! FIND it to watch political comedy at its BEST (and its BEST means--at least to me--that even if its dangerously funny, it is based in TOTAL TRUTH). Those who know me, know that while Mr. Maher and I have VERY similar political views! We have only two real points of divergence in our opinions: 1) Governmental support for tee Arts (he says NEVER and I say hes an idioit on this matter) and 2) many of the tenets of religion (he says its all a ridiculous farce . . . and I disagree)! In this regard he is my religious version of P.D.Q. Bach: a supremely gifted and insightful parodist who understands the subject matter so well that his parodies are totally, plausibly true . . . were it not for matters such as taste, control, context, etc. (but comedy does not demand realism). In any event, his now-much-discussed God-Rant will offend MANY (its his audacity--and his sheer, exuberant commitment to what HE KNOWS will generate controversy--that dazzles me . . . even IF I dont agree with him)! Its rather like watching one of those Serena Williams matches where she is in TOTAL control and then, what she calls BAD SERENA comes out and yes, its a disaster in the making! STILL, one cant take your eyes off of her (theres attitude, energy and a supeme KILLER instinct, that usually is going to pull it out . . . yes, Maher has that). OR Its rather like listenng to a LIVE, LATE-IN-THE-CAREER Leontyne Price performance of Pace, Pace mio Dio (from Verdi La Forza del Destino): Yes, the voice is thrillingly there and yes there will be the glorious piano B flat and the final, thrillingly climactic B flat that will drive you to operatic ectasy . . . but you also know that NAUGHTY LEONTYNE will add a couple of Gospel swoops that will make one blush . . . as well as that inevitably grotesque MA that will just drive everyone into gales of laughter . . . not AT her, just at the fact that she had the attitude (dare I say balls) to go into FULL, RAW, CHEST MODE. NO MATTER WHAT. Mahers got it all: The George Zimmerman comment, alone, is worth the whole excerpt! LISTEN, CONSIDER and ENJOY both GOOD Bill and BAD Bill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is everything that makes him lovable and everything that makes him a jerk . . . all in one 7-minute (or so) excerpt!
