I actually campaigned for marriage equality in my state (We beat California! Eat it, hippies!) and even I cant get that worked up over someone kicking in $1000 to a Prop-8 campaign six years ago. I mean, one grand? Guys like Eich drop that on dinner some nights. Thats like a normal, working-class person buying a pizza. Its just not that big a deal. Also, to be consistent Id have to cease doing business with a wide range of vendors and firms who, for one reason or another, do things I find politically disagreeable. If Eich was using his position at Mozilla for evil deeds, that would be one thing. But hes not and even his critics admit that his views are not shared by the company at large and do not control the companys hiring or personnel policies. Nobody is claiming that hes ever mistreated gay employees. Ever. So what were really talking about here are his ideas. He just doesnt think gay marriage should be legal. Hes dead wrong about that. But people have the right to be wrong without being hounded out of their jobs for making a false step. BTW, you know who else opposed marriage equality in 2008 and until quite recently? Barack Obama. Eich should rethink his support for things like Prop 8 but this Dump Firefox! campaign smacks of moralistic preening and opportunistic dog-piling that doesnt cost its advocates anything. Now that marriage equality is becoming nigh-unstoppable politically and judicially, anyone who opposed it must be PURGED! and SHAMED!, right? I mean, now that weve won and they cant really hurt us, its time for PAYBACK! Yeah... Count me out.
