I am a full time overhead crane guy, and a hobby machinist. My work has taken me into lots of machine shops, one man job shops, aerospace manufacturing, steel manufacturing, foundries, engine rebuilders, shipyards, gear labs, R&D labs, mines, dedicated die shops. I have installed, serviced, and inspected cranes over all sorts of machines. This gives me a chance to see lots of different machinists at work. Machinist barely describes what people do. The guy who runs the EDM in the die shop for a vinyl manufacturer is very different from the roll grinder at a rebar mill, the guy who cuts and sharpens gear hobs...it goes on and on. I enjoy getting to see what gets done, get to talk to different folks who do incredibly different jobs but all share the title machinist. There are plenty of interesting pictures and stories here. I enjoy reading problems and solutions. But I am baffled why people bother posting or replying to if you dont _______ then you are not really a machinist.
