I am conflicted, Noam... When, and how, do you decide that (state) violence has reached a limit where a violent end to it can be morally justified in the context of the general human condition? And if you build a peaceful society with the violent demise of the older violent power structure, inviolably involving the loss of human lives, of those who may have been monsters in their institutional roles but were ordinary people in their private lives nonetheless, is it really a society of peace after all? Or is it just the wrong beginning to the right enterprise? Or perhaps even the right end to a wrong system, achieved via not-so-perfect means? And what does it imply for responsible objective morality in the context of the private individuals, and their families and friends, who would inevitably lose their lives in a revolution?
