I am currently reading this book to get a grasp of perhaps how and why we (the urban community/church) are the way we...are. Here is a quote: Under the lax moral life of the plantation, where marriage was a farce, laziness a virtue, and property a theft, many of the worst characteristics of the Negro masses of today had their seed in this period (1820-1865) of the slaves ethical growth. the home was ruined under the very shadow of the church, white and black; here habits of shiftlessness took root, and sullen hopelessness replaced hopeful strife. W.E.B. Dubois, The Souls of Black Folks, pg. 147. (wow...see any correlation from then to today?)
