I am excited to announce the Getting You Started in Beekeeping Workshop Series. The goal of this series of five workshops will be to get you up and running with a few hives and for you to gain sound understanding of how to manage them in your first year of beekeeping. I will hold these workshops at our farm in Johnson Canyon, presentations will be held inside, as the seasons progress we will move outside to the apiary for hands-on study. The cost is $40.00/session or $150.00 for all five sessions. Each workshop will be 2-hours long and will start at 6pm. When we move out into the apiary you will need some basic gear (veil, long sleeves, gloves, etc). If you do not already own a veil or suit, please contact me, I do have a limited number of veils that I am willing to lend out. Workshop #1 (February 6th): The basics. Topics to cover basic honey bee biology, products from the hive, beekeeping gear, information on different hive types so you can decide what is best for you. The different options of obtaining bees. Ill have several props available here for you to look over (bee suits, smokers, hive tools, hives, wax, propolis, etc). Workshop #2 (February 20th): The basics continued. Topics to cover basic honey bee biology, spring hive management, what are swarms (part of bee biology), what to expect your first year of beekeeping, package bee installation. Workshop #3: (March 6): The basics continued. Topics to cover, more honey bee biology, how to differentiate between the types of comb that bees build and how to identify the contents, a few different methods of hive management. Outside demo on how to light a smoker. Workshop #4 (March 19): The basics continued. Summer and Fall hive management, the various stages of brood from eggs to larva to capped cells, outside hands on workshop, how to find the queen or how do you find sign that the queen is in the hive, egg spotting. Workshop #5 (TBD): Beekeeping carpentry workshop. How to assemble and manufacture your own hive bodies, frames, top-covers, and bottom boards. If time permits we may cover building top-bar hives or I may make that a separate workshop altogether.
