I am going to interject my own opinion into this debate regarding publicly-funded education such as the program proposed by President Obama, in which I fully support. Education is the sure-fire way to success in this country. There are few people who would disagree with this point. Statistics show that, on average, those with a college or graduate degree earn more than those with a high-school degree or below. And since employers no longer offer job-training programs but expect the schools to pick up the slack, the schools should do just that. And most of them do pretty well. And not only would you see more successful students ready to enter into the workforce after graduation (if only they could do so with little to no debt as possible) , but you would see a more informed populous, which would do wonders fixing the multiple problems facing America in the 21st century. Education is, without a doubt in my mind, a win-win for America, and an opportunity that should leave no American behind. So, after all of that potential benefit that would come our way with an educated and informed populous, why should students be overburdened with its rising cost? Why should a quality education be so expensive, and only obtainable with either a lot of money, good grades, or numerous hours of digging? It, in my opinion, should be a right for all Americans. And anything to lower education costs should be something we look into. If students did not have to worry about costs, they would have more time to devote to studying. I know many people who have a school-part-time job-part-time job-sleep-repeat-type of schedule. If they did not have to worry about those part-time jobs that eat up their schedules, that time would be devoted to studying, which, in effect, helps them in the long-run. People have the work-ethic and dedication and strive for a quality education. It should not be punished with expensive costs that overburden them. Many things need to be fixed with our system of education in America. The teaching profession needs to be treated with the respect it deserves (being equated with a doctor or lawyer), all avenues of effective teaching methods need to be looked at, privatization and standardized testing needs to stop, school choice should be allowed, and education should be publicly funded. No other profession has the importance of the education profession, because that is the root of everything else. Lets look at Europe. Education is the future of this country, and it is time that we realize that and treat it with the respect and significance it holds. Publicly-funded community college is a start, and hopefully can be the milestone. I hope the President pushes for it.
