I am not in India to experience the sentiment. Watching it from a distance what the decisive victory tells me is this: That, we, the people of India matter. That it no longer matters if you went to the right school or the right college. It no longer matters that you dont speak English. We like it that you have the confidence to do your interviews in whichever language you are comfortable in. Even if the television anchor is asking you questions in English, you answer in Hindi. It is pretty cool. I see it as the eventual lifting of some of our colonial hangovers. That there is a world beyond grades. Perhaps somewhere, there is that hope...that any tea-seller can be something...someday...that sometimes these rags wala stories...they are really true. And I respect the mandate.
