I am not sure what thought process led to Israels decision to mount an assault more savage and long lasting than any assault in recent years. Maybe they thought that overwhelming firepower, the destruction, and mounting Palestinian deaths will cause the Palestinians to surrender to Israel. It seems that the brutality of the assault and all the Palestinian deaths, far from causing the Palestinians to surrender, have backfired and are causing Israel a public relations disaster from which it may never recover.
