I am really loving John Olivers new show. This clip addresses one of the bigger problems we face in the US today. Our criminal justice system is out of control, we have the highest prison population, both by sheer numbers AND per capita of any nation. As a nation we just ignore the way we are treating our prisoners, and one of the reasons that it is so out of control is privatization. You know, privatization, that thing that so many claim will make things cheaper and more efficient through free market pressures, but all too often just leads to massive amounts of taxpayer money becoming private profits while the actual services provided become worse than they ever were under state control. Free market solutions are, to be blunt, total bullshit. The state really does do some things better than the private sector, and some things should not be about profit - roads, healthcare, police, fire departments, clean water, sewage, the list goes on and on. Privatization is bad for you and me and good for the few people getting rich off of it. No essential service or natural monopoly should be in the private sector. Today this includes things like healthcare and internet access. Prisons are certainly on the list. -MK
