I am recommending that all persons interested in a better understanding of the American experience and slavery take time immediately to go and view the movie presently released which was produced by Steven McQueen - 12 Years a Slave. This movie is based on a depiction of the real life experiences of a black man who was a free Negro before the civil war. Solomon Northrup was kidnapped in Washingto, DC, and sold into slavery in the deep south. The movie is not for the faint of heart. It depicts cruelty, inhumanity, and abuse of black slaves in the United States in a realistic way that few today are even willing to openly talk about. Yet it is probably the best film or documentary ever produced in this country which exposes and reopens the wounds of the peculiar institution which has affected the lives, attitudes, and behavior of almost all Americans of color in this country at this time. My firm belief is that in order to understand where we as a country are today, and where we are going and/or could be in the future, we must have a realistic grasp of our history and where we have been in the past. This is not for children... I strongly recommend you view it, think about it, and remember...
