I am so sick of hear people talk about the millions of people on food stamps. They talk about these recipients as if they are not human. They talk about how they must be lazy and they need to get off their asses if they want to eat like everybody else. When you are on food stamps it is not some grand sum of money. There is no eating lobster or high end steak. This a myth started to make people hate the poor. People on food stamps dont proudly wave their card around in line and talk about all the expensive food they are getting. There is a quick maneuver you learn to get the card out of your wallet, swipe it, and get it back in your wallet before anyone can see what it is. It is spending hours the week you get the benefits on the card planning meals and trying to find a way to make sure you can eat everyday. Its knowing that even though you are working hard at what you do you still cant provide for your family. It is a shameful feeling, one you cant wait to shake. It is hoping that people arent going to judge you if they happen to see the card you use to pay for your food. People love to jump on the poor with things like the car they drive or the cell phone they have or the fact they have children. How do you know their life? How do you know they didnt have a decent job, one that made enough to have nice things but not enough to really save any money, and then they got laid off? How do you know their car isnt second hand and they have to have it to get to the shitty job they are working that still doesnt pay the bills? How do you know how much they paid for their phone? iPhones are $0.99 when they are a few models old. How do you know the phone plan isnt being paid for by a family member? What if the car they drive is actually their parents and they are just borrowing it? The fact is you dont. You have no right to judge someone just because they need a little help. If you want people off food stamps maybe you need to think about what kind of money those people need to make to live and figure out how to make that happen. Everyone I know that is or was on assistance would gladly work. Give them a job that will pay their bills and they would be grateful and go to work everyday and earn the money they need. As soon as you can make that happen, people wont be on food stamps any more.
