I am so sorry to hear the news that Edgar Lovett died. I spent 4 years with Edgar at PEA and always remember him as one of the nicest and most gentle people I have ever known. He was always ready to help anyone and truly a kind soul. To this day, I regularly tell my hockey buddies one of the funny Edgar stories from our 4 years together. Edgar was playing JV lacrosse against another school and one opponent kept slashing him with his stick and doing absolutely anything he could to try to overcome Edgars height, size, and natural abilities. I was photographing the game from the near sideline, so I watched and heard everything unfold. Throughout the first half, Edgar constantly and politely advised the guy to adjust his style of play, but to no avail. At one point, Edgar had enough. He basically lifted the kid off the ground and provided an attitudinal adjustment, then threw him on the ground. This was nothing unusual in these kind of lacrosse matches, but I broke out laughing as I heard Edgar - breathless and laboring to speak as he lashed the kid with his stick 5 or 6 times - yell, I ... TOLD YOU ... LITTLE MAN ... LEAVE ME ALONE ... AND ... STOP ... SLASHING ME! I ... DIDNT ... WANT ... TO ... DO ... THIS! I was laughing so hard that I could barely see the action through my viewfinder for the rest of the game. The best part of this story was not watching Edgar react to the unfair play, but understanding that his anger was more directed at the fact that he HAD to punish the guy to make it stop. He seemed disappointed in himself that he couldnt resolve this situation peacefully and amicably. To a hockey player like myself, the story is funny on its face - Ive NEVER heard a hockey play apologize for having to punish an opponent. But, to me it perfectly summarized Edgars character, behavior, and integrity. As they say in New York, he was a mensch. Im so sorry he is gone.
