I am working on an article or, more likely, a series of articles debunking common misconceptions about Israel. For those interested, this is the bakers dozen which makes up my provisional list. 1. Israel was created by a UN sponsored partition of Palestine. 2. Zionism is a religious movement which abhors anti-Semitism and reflects God’s covenant with the Jews as expressed in Torah. 3. There never has been a Palestinian nation. 4. The Zionists who flocked to Palestine were refugees escaping Nazi persecution and justice required that Palestinians carry the burden of restitution by giving up their ancestral home lands to Jewish victims of the Holocaust. 5. Palestinians and more generally all Arab nations have always been hostile towards Jews. 6. Palestinians who are unreasonable in their attitude to Jews have always been the aggressors. The Zionist forces have always merely responded to Arab aggression and terror. 7. The 1948 and 1967 wars were started by Palestinians and Arab nations. 8. Israel is engaged in the self defense of its people and borders rather than a calculated program of ethnic cleansing, genocide and territorial expansion. 9. It is the Palestinian resistance rather than the occupation forces which consistently violate principles of human decency and International law. At the very least, they are equally to blame for their continuing conflict. 10. The Zionist Jews who established Israel by force and those who have flocked into Palestine since then, have an ancient connection with the Holy land. 11. Israel wants peace but faces an existential threat from Palestinians and a monolithic Arab world aligned as one against Israel.. 12. Jews alone are to blame for the dispossession and oppression of the Palestinian people. 13. The conflict between Jews and Palestinians can only be resolved talks between them without external interference by the international community.
