I believe it is important to discuss the domestic violence connection to this tragedy because it is so often overlooked. The coward who murdered the police officers, first shot and seriously wounded his ex girl friend. It is too early to fully understand his motives, but it is common for abusers to kill themselves after killing or seriously wounding their intimate partners. It is quite possible he decided to kill the police officers because he was going to end his life anyway. If the criminal justice system treated assaults on women with the same priority they give to attacks on police officers, there would be a huge reduction in domestic violence crime. As it turns out such good practices would also result in saving many lives of police officers. Ironically some police officers abuse their own partners and too often their colleagues protect them or otherwise minimize domestic violence crimes. They are probably unaware that in doing so they place the lives of all law enforcement professionals in greater jeopardy.
