I believe its time to abandon identities that silo us according to where we born, whether we are migrant or not. They dont serve us. I see that vividly when people in both the US and Mexico are standing up to their own police security forces because their lives do not matter. We need another kind of language that unites us. What does it mean when one cannot survive in their country of origin? Who are the citizens today? Who are the migrants today? How are we affected by exploitation, exclusion, and even death inflicted upon us by our countries of origin? These are big questions that we have to answer as a movement that is about racial justice. Rinku Sen once said, We have to expand our notion of who is affected. Another one of my sheroes, Saskia Sassen, also has a term: The authorized, but unrecognized. The unauthorized, but recognized. These are the types of questions I ask myself in my art making, how to expand the notion of how we are affected by domestic and international policies. How do we create an alternative imaginary?
