I cant help but to comment on the rat infestation situation in Bukit Batok. I stay in Sengkang Rivervale Drive, an area used to be under the town council ran by PAP until a lady single-handedly forced the ward to go into a By-Election in which WP won. Also for the record, I used to stay in Hougang for years both under PAP and WP-ran town councils. So far there is no different in the living conditions here (and also in Hougang ward). In fact with the limited resources, my WP-ran town council has managed to keep the area clean (workers sweep the void decks in the mornings and clear the chutes every week day), new signboards were just recently changed to make it more obvious for the visitors to identify the blocks (previously under PAP it was very hard to identify the blocks), lifts were regularly maintained with breakdowns quickly rectified (just Thursday I saw an engineer trying to fix a lift at nearly midnight) etc. Definitely Punggol East SMC is not what the PAP painted in their election campaigns - slumps - under WP. The recent salvos, though not new, at WP for not able to account for their town council arrears and dodging responsibilities are definitely uncalled for. I agree with Ms Sylvia Lim: let the deeds of what WP had done for its constituents justify if the WP should retain their seats, or win more, in the next General Elections. As far as I am concern, I am very happy with my current living conditions under WP. It is no different from those PAP-run wards. Certainly I do not have to deal with rats infestation which my dear Bukit Batok friends living under the PAP-run town council are now facing. As long as the ward is maintained, it doesnt matter to me if the account book is not balanced. After all I know that these are conservancy fees which some residents had defaulted on. There are still poor people in Singapore, you know. In retrospect, had the community of rats be found in the WP wards, we will not be reading about how the town council is trying their best. Instead we will be seeing even more attacks (daily?) of the WP by PAP MPs, and even scarier prognosis of what Singapore will be like if opposition parties win the next election. Other than trying their best, the MP for Bukit Batok ward was also very quick to put the blame on the stray dogs. State media repeated this over and over again, now causing the Bukit Batok residents to think likewise. This quick taichi incidentally sounds like one of the incompetency charges PAP threw at the WP. What was briefly mentioned in the press but very quickly hushed up is the fact that this rodent problem is not new. Rats are highly productive but they do not appear overnight. In fact one of the residents had mentioned, according to The Straits Times, that he had brought the issue to the attention of the town council but no actions was done until now. What we are seeing now is the consequent of a resident who could not take it any more and post it on social media. The situation has exploded beyond cover-up by any party. In the first place, why are there stray dogs causing menace? Why didnt the town council act on the root of the problem early enough and allow it to escalate to a stage at which its residents health is at risk?? Lastly, PAP supporters have been very quiet over this issue. Has the situation been reversed, I believed they will be writing letters after letters to the press to attack WP, and scaring the rest of the Singaporeans. In contrast, WP and other opposition parties in Singapore and their supporters are keeping quiet. To use the words of PAP MP of Mountbatten SMC: yes, it was an oversight and lets rectify where we have gone wrong and move on. Marry Christmas. (I dont think PAP will let the matter rest if WP makes the merry mistake either), Actions speak louder than words, truly.
