I decided to go with my curiosity today and see what the GPS would recommend for a trip from Williamson to the Huntington Mall. Two of the three routes were typical (119 to Charleston and 52 to Huntington), but the third - and shortest - was ... interesting. Start by taking 119 out of Williamson (naturally). Turn onto 65 and go to Lenore (why?). Turn up Laurel Creek and go through the tunnel to Dingess (what?!). Head over the mountain to Mud Fork, then turn up Harts Creek (huh uh). Connect with 10 at Harts and proceed to Barboursville from there (okay that part is actually reasonable). Somewhere in our GPS systems we need to put in logic that if the route contains more than a few switchbacks and a mile-long one-lane tunnel, its automatically demoted and will not be suggested unless thats absolutely the only way to go.
