I decided to start with something that may seem trivial or simple. I primarily work out of 2 places: 1) My home office and 2) from MBody Industries, LLC headquartered in Brea, CA. I was finally pushed over the edge when I questioned a statement from July sent by the HOA of an investment property in Las Vegas. After calling the management company I was embarrassed to learn the statement was July 2012!! That was it. I reflected on all of the times that I may have missed this or that or something grew WAY out of proportion because I missed it due to my lack of organization. I decided, I am doing 2 things: 1) I am cleaning this place up!! (we all get busy. There were more pressing things to be done with MBody Pro and with other things, but I realized if I did not do this, insignificant things would be come obstacles and I have no time for that) 2) I need to instal some habits to prevent this from happening again! Habit 1 - My desk would no longer be a staging area! I would find homes for things and PUT THEM THERE... PERIOD! Habit 2 - All mail and bills would now go into their new files and that would serve as a staging area for things - bills would go our immediately as well as all things would be scanned for storage - I DO NOT believe in paper storage unless absolutely necessary! Again, this may sound simple, but sometimes, as a business owner of a small business, these small mole hills become mountains and prohibit forward progress of the more important things. Lastly - Habit 3 - I time everything. When I begin a task, it gets (by default) 15 minutes. After that, it is reevaluated for priority. Chunking works only if you stay flexible; remember 15 minutes us the default, not the rule.
