I didnt know until my friends Daphne Osena Paez and Franz Dejon, both of whom have ties with or live(d) in Canada, made comments on a recent post of mine that the taxes we Filipinos pay are equivalent to or higher than those paid by Canadians. And yet Canadians can rest easy that the government has got their back in times of sickness (and education is provided for, too). Yet here sicknesses wipe out fortunes, make beggars of hardworking citizens, rob us of our dignity queueing up for help, begging for help on bended knees -- I am angry that we have not been up in arms against this fact of Philippine life. How easily, with absolutely no resistance, have we come to accept the misfortune of being citizens of a country that takes us for granted!
