I dont know if anyone else feels like I do, but I am definitely feeling my own mortality. My cousin told me about 5 years ago (he is now 60), that when he turned 50 his friends started dropping like flies. I am seeing so many that I love passing away; it is really sad and an eye-opening transition. I remember about 7 years ago, when my grandmother, in her early 90s, told me that she had lived too long. I said, No Grams, that is not true. I need you! She smiled, and said, I know darling, but everyone in my family has passed away. At the time, I felt affronted. Was I not her family? But I now have come to the conclusion, that we tend to ground ourselves based on the family that we GREW UP with. That was who she was talking about. So when we reach the point where we are the elders (or soon will be), we feel alone in a way that our children and younger people cannot understand. It is part of life, and unavoidable. But that intellectual acknowledgement does not diminish the sadness or loss we inevitably feel....
