I dont typically post anything negative but when its affecting my kids, be warned, rant about to begin - mama bear is some kind of unhappy this morning! I have extremely athletic kids. Grade 5 for Anika and a member of anything athletics related for extra curricular activities. I cant even begin to describe what being an athlete has done for her. Being that they missed how much school for a strike already this year, because the teachers were so concerned about their students that they took a stand, and I supported. This morning I was asked to parent coach Anikas volleyball Team so they could continue their season - first game to begin tmrw. This particular teacher had been looking for weeks for a teacher coach to back the TRU student giving her time to take the team on and practice with them. I of course replied immediately with a yes, of course. Minutes later the decision was made that without having a teacher rather than a parent, the team could not play this year! My response? Well.... If you know me you can just picture how my thoughts were being placed and extreme hold back of my disappointment for the kids, to not come out of my mouth. This particular teacher, a friend of mine, and a huge advocate and already strapped for extra curricular time has done his best to search out others, as committed as he, and came up empty handed. He can only do 1 game with the girls (time he already didnt have because he coaches the boys as well). My question is this. Of all the teachers at his fine, above rated school, knowing that the girls will forfeit their entire season, not one of you or some of you could find the time to show up for even a game each, to support these young athletes? This is NOT ok! Something has to change! If you all care sooooo much about your students then figure it out. Its an hour - 1 day a week, 4 times. Im sure one teacher could do 1 game each. The girls are excited and have put in their time at practice and now will only be afforded 1 game?! Does anyone else see a problem with this? As a young woman, sports both shaped me and saved me and this is being taken from them at a complicated age. Our kids need these opportunities. They deserve them. I want to thank the teacher who tried so hard to make this happen, but to the rest of you, to allow a whole team to have to quit, shame on you! Rant over. I dont feel any better:( not looking forward to after school and the disappointment my little girl is going to feel. Especially when just this morning I gave her hope that I could help save her team and now its just not the case. Booooooo!
