I dont wish to start a parenting thread o doom (those have happened around here before), but I am curious about this phenomenon: homework for primary school children. Various friends of mine have children aged about 8 (give or take), and all of those children seem to get homework every night, often a fair bit. What on Gods green earth are schools trying to achieve by setting homework for 8 year olds? I realise homework is helpful at older ages, and particularly in the last couple of years of high school... but surely not at primary school. Apart from the fact that it must drive parents around the bend. What is going on here?
