I feel compelled to share our horrible experience so that it doesnt happen to your family, friends, coworkers, acquaintances, campground neighbors, etc. Im not fishing for sympathy. I just know that many of you will be camping before school starts. James was terribly burned last Thursday in a campfire accident and weve been in the Harborview Burn Center in Seattle since then. Watching your kid experience this level of pain and risk to his active lifestyle is horrible. PLEASE DONT POUR ANY KIND OF GAS ON A FIRE OR HOT COALS. At the very least, use lighter fluid designed for campfires that splashes out of the container and dont squeeze the bottle for a continuous stream. Keep flammable liquids stored away from kids including the older ones who may be tempted to start a fire on their own. That includes things like camp stove gas which is what got James. Also dont assume your kids are safe even if theyre away from the fire. Be aware of what people are doing as they work the fire. Thank you. People will ask what happened and how James is doing so you can read the comments for more info. But again, Im sharing to prevent this from happening to others in the coming days, months and years.
