I finally finished He, She and It, and I have to strongly - TopicsExpress

I finally finished He, She and It, and I have to strongly recommend it to anyone interested in AI, Robotics, or just human computer interaction. Its also just a good story, although it eventually does start to drag on, I think it should have been two books, and it almost contains too many sophisticated ideas to not become a little heavy. Its a science fiction book about a future world, with an advanced form of the internet connecting humanity, and focuses on a post apocalyptic town where a very advanced robot is created. It surprised me that the book was written in 1991, because some of the ideas are pretty advanced for that time period. Remember the internet was not nearly developed as well as it is right now at that time. Since we are really in the infancy of the internet right now, I did think it had some amazing insight into which direction we might go with the net in the future. I think the book helped change some ideas I had previously had, especially about the roll of machines and robots. For example I really always strongly thought I could never love a robot, but right now I am not sure. I think its definitely possible, in a future world with a machine as sophisticated at YOD, that I could love one. I know I am going to get in trouble for saying that but you have to read the book. As the main character says, Only hatred shocks, me. If we can love a date palm, or a puppy or a cyborg, perhaps we can love each other better also.
