I finished this poem that I started and have re-visited a few times over the past couple of years. Ive been struggling with myself tonight on whether to share it here or just let it remain in my files. It is as the title suggests, a little rambling and random. Much of my own past, as well as old and newer friends recollections of our journeys to now are included, and it is meant as an acknowledgment to those journeys and as a shout out to all of us whove survived to this point. They are not meant to be viewed as typical. Some will have navigated the years that have passed since we returned better than others. Im just glad were all here to be able to talk about it. So for what its worth... Raw and Random Ramblings Anyone else sometimes wonder at the things we might have missed Those dark years after the war while we were hammered, high, or pissed? I didn’t much like myself sober, and others didn’t like me drunk On the inside a mostly troubled young man, on the outside just a punk I checked my conscience at the doorway of the 70s saloons Turned my memory down and the volume up on the old 60s tunes Surely had an angel on my shoulder, most of all those angry years To have not known steel bars or early grave while grinding my life’s gears I wondered at our silence, and I just never understood Why being home would feel… well, not bad, but not so good And so it went for many years, we died or we endured Sharp edges somewhat rounded, though hearts not completely cured Fast forward to more recent times of being a Nam vet When we can gather once again and talk of the delta, DMZ, or Tet Now there’s old warriors and wannabes riding the same bandwagon But patriots are simple to distinguish from those who do the loudest braggin’ It’s a little late in the game for apologies, coming in or going out That we’ve mellowed some in the passage of time, there can be little doubt So sharpest salute to you genuine brothers and sisters who’ve rode the horse this far A bit weathered, scarred, and wobbly, but we and God know who we are!
