I first became aware of this web site when Barbara posted the picture of the Mother House. I tried to comment on the picture to answer a few questions but sine I was not a member (or friend) the comments were not added and subsequently lost. As I mentioned with our graduation picture, at the time the school (St. Clare Academy) was coed to the 8th grade and than high school for the girls. As I recall the building where that graduation picture was taken and probably the one, which became coop was the school and dorm for the girls. Also the dining rooms were in that building. Of course the boys and girls ate separately. To the left of that building was the laundry and furnace for the school and other buildings. To the left of the laundry was a small building which served as the infirmary where you went if you were sick or had a minor problem. To the left of the infirmary was the Boys House. I don’t recall the exact number but 60 to 100 boys seem likely. We had three dorms, the little kids, the middle (3rd grade to 5th or 6th grade) dorm and one dorm for the older boys to the 8th grade. The dorms were spread over two floors. We had a baseball field, basketball court, handball court and woods to play in along with many other areas to keep us occupied. The baseball field was along side the back road. In the Boys house, on the first floor, we had a large hall that we would gather in when we had inclement weather or confined to the house. Also on the first floor was the locker room and showers. I believe that the Boys House and property was the first to be sold off. I took a drive to the school in the 70’s and saw homes were built where the Boys House and grounds once had been. I don’t want to neglect the girls, they had a tennis court, pavilion and walking paths to occupy themselves. One of the comments that I read suggested that many at the school were products of one-parent families. Years after I left the school I realized the same thing. Even though it was called St. Clare Military Academy it really wasn’t that type of school at all but a place recommended probably by a local priest or some one of that nature in order to provide a stable environment for the children. Recently, after sixty years, we had a small reunion of a few of us from the class of 1953. For the most part we all had fond memories of the school and wondered where we would have been had we not attended? Our teachers were Sr. Mary Paul, Sr. Mary McCaffrey and Sr. Celine. Will place some more comments and pictures.
