I first heard Savoy Brown on a record I bought that was a compilation of British bands playing American blues songs. They had two tracks on the record and then a few weeks later I happened to catch them at the Fillmore East. I would say this was probably around 1968. I then went out and bought what I thought was their first album. The liner notes (remember them) made reference to a record called Shake Down. So that became my quest was to track down that album. In those dark ages days when you searched for something you actually had to leave your house and go places to look. I went to every record store I could get to, including several in the village in New York City that carried all kinds of records you could never find at a Sam Goodys. I even wrote letters to addresses in Britain that I saw on the liner notes for other British artists for things like their fan clubs. I explained what I was looking for but all I ever got back from them were instructions on how to join the fan clubs. I figured I would never find the record. Then one day while reading the Village Voice newspaper I came across and ad for a place called The Raw Blues Record Club saying they specialized in rare blues records and import records. I sent them a letter saying what I was looking for and they sent me their catalog which was just some folded mimeographed sheets of paper folded and stapled together. I checked their inventory list and there it was -- Shake Down by Savoy Brown. I sent them a money order and within four days the record showed up in the mail. Success!!!! Of course I felt a little let down because the quest was now over. Kind of like what Mr Spock once said in Star Trek. It is not logical, but often true. Having is not nearly as good as wanting. Dont get me wrong, I was thrilled to actually own it. Now today I can just go on YouTube and listen to the entire album. Life is not as much fun and adventurous as it used to be......
