I found a mix-tape (yes, friends, an actual TAPE) in the back of a closet and converted to MP3. It was labeled METAL. I listened to it in my car, in traffic, in the rain this morning and was instantly returned to a younger self. So here is a shoutout to my best friend since I was 5! The entire playlist reminded me of Tommy Cusack. I remember Heartfield, you, me and Chris in a grimy studio in Long Island City trying to play Judas Priest. I want to remember that we were not terrible, but I know we were. I remember all those nights when we all piled into my car to go to Lamores East with Dawn P. Treffeisen and Janette Daniele and the whole crew! I dont any of us were actually old enough to get in, but some how we did. I must have looked like I was 12. And remember the parties in the Gardens at Shalini Melwanis house with Francoise Deray; Laurie Bunea Keba; Mitch Constantinescu and what seemed like an army of folks. And we cant forget the parties in Richmond Hill that JoAnna Mark Maietta threw or the time she let me audition for her band -- when everyone of them but her hated me? Mostly, I remember hanging in your house or in the park almost every night blasting Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and sometimes Moterhead and if we were filling heady Rush or Pink Floyd. We talked non-stop about everything, good and bad. That was a long, long time ago. So, Tommy (and I am allowed to call you that), sit back and listen to Priest one more time and remember only the good times not the bad! And, lets hang soon. To my new friends and academic friends, yes I just outed myself as a metalhead. What can I say, I was young, white and working-class. And, it was the late 1970s and early 1980s. Dont judge. youtube/watch?v=L397TWLwrUU
