I gather that some could not watch the debate via the STV website because it was overloaded. This speaks volumes to me about the need for such programmes to be properly broadcast to the whole of the UK TV networks. I think the arguments as to why this did not happen are very feeble indeed. We all need to be informed and to understand what is happening and why some Scottish people want independence, not just the Scottish voters. I also think that it is very wrong to dangle a carrot to the Scottish voters that if they vote no to independence, Scotland will get more self-governing powers. If that is something that i.s right, then it should have been thought more about before this situation. Who knows ? Perhaps this matter would not have arisen in the first place. I think it is stupid for people to figure out which cause did best on the basis of the personality and debating abilities of the contestants. What ought to count is the balance of arguments for and against a proposal, in addition to aspects known from beyond the actual discussion. We suffer generally from there being far too superficial evaluation of arguments or the capabilities of people for particular jobs on the basis of their persona presentations. Too often people who look good and can talk well are thought to be the best for things rather than people who may not look quite so photogenic and who are much quieter and thoughtful. As long as the quieter and more thoughtful are not so much so that they are half-dead, as it were, I would go for them much more. Oh yes ! While we are about it, if Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have their own Assemblies/Parliaments, it is very wrong and misguided that we in England do not have our own as well, even if our present Parliament was originally the English Parliament. This would also mean that we would need to have common Parliamentary debates with representatives of all four national parliaments/assemblies on matters of common concern and interest. A step towards this would be if on English only matters, only English MPs took part in debates and votes, rather than having representatives of the other UK nations taking a full part, as happens at present. I think it is a very cock-eyed situation as things stand at present.
