I got a shot of the historic marker on the Battery in Charleston - TopicsExpress

I got a shot of the historic marker on the Battery in Charleston near the spot where Robert Smalls seized the Confederate steam transport CSS Planter in Charleston Harbor while its officers wee ashore. The Historic Charleston Foundation and the African American Alliance, marking the 150th anniversary of the heroic feat aboard the Planter, placed the marker at the Battery two years ago. Losing the Civil War so traumatized white Southerners that it scarred not just the way they interpreted that tragic conflict, but the way they recorded most of their history. Nowhere is that more obvious than in the recording of black history. For the most part, whites dealt with the history of slavery and its aftermath by ignoring it, as in the case of Robert Smalls.
