I got this idea from a friend who posted for Autism Awareness day. She shared her sons story, and this is my son, Dylan Brumleys story: Dylan was the sweetest baby boy Id ever seen. Even after being born almost 3 months early by emergency c-section, he was also one of the chubbiest and healthiest babies. He stole my heart in his incubator when he was a day old and wrapped his hand around my pinkie, and he will have my heart forever. Dylan had major meltdowns from the time he was 2, could not speak intelligably at 3, did not interact well with others, and was very rigid and repetitive in his movements. He could tell you every scene in every Star Wars movie and take apart and put electronics back together, but could not button a shirt. After years of private schooling and speech therapy, I was forced to put him in public school due to my divorce. His 1st and 2nd grade teachers loved him and praised him. They also worried about him. Dylan was diagnosed in 2nd grade with Aspergers. By this point he could not write, was no longer potty trained, had little friends, and hardly ever slept. He has gone on to be diagnosed with pervasive personality disorder, conduct disorder, endokopresis, and dysgraphia. Autism is not a one fits all diagnosis. My son is intelligent and loving. Yet he finds great joy in being able to manipulate and scare people. While I struggle to figure out what to do with him so that he may grow into a healthy, happy, productive member of society, its also confusing for me to differentiate between his Autism and other disorders, normal adolescence, and the sweet lovable little boy who gives the best hugs in the world. Thank you for reading his Autism story.
