I grew up in Indianapolis,Indiana. Ive not lived there for years and in a way my recollections about the city are frozen in my mind as it existed years ago when I lived there. When I hear of stuff like this, its like I no longer know that city as the one frozen in my mind no longer exists. Im very familiar with the area where this mall is located and its not a place where one would expect gangs of marauding youth or shots fired, but both occurred. Unlike cities on the east coast where I currently reside, Indianapolis is a sprawling Midwestern city with distinct areas ranging from suburban to urban, but its doesnt have ethnic enclaves like New York or Philly. This particular mall is in a suburban sort of area, but the kids from the inner city apparently like to hang out there and in the course of that a brawl broke out with shots fired. The first fallout behind this will be economic as people are now quite cautious about going to this mall now that the illusion of safety has been shattered. Sales and traffic will drop sharply and it will take a long time for it to recover if ever. For those of us who criticize the system on police abuse and related issues, this sort of thing becomes problematic as many will call for something to be done and, indeed, something needs to be done. Invariably in the course of doing something, something abusive will occur, but the thug behavior of these youth justifies it. So for every two steps some of us take forward, were dragged back ten steps-- and its not because someone tricked these guys into this sort of behavior. Sheer stupidity and ignorance was all that was required to compel these senseless acts. At some point, an appeal to reason and logic must be made to eradicate this sort of behavior. This will sound radical---and perhaps it is---but maybe whats needed is some sort of re-education camp.
