I guess you could say my 7 1/2 month old GSD pup Beckett deserves - TopicsExpress

I guess you could say my 7 1/2 month old GSD pup Beckett deserves a great meal, maybe a few...for saving Bradys life tonight.... She was locked up in the kennel runs, Im weighing puppies, and she starts barking like there is no tomorrow. I tell her, be quiet!! She isnt listening. So I poke my head through her door and look outside, its 10:45 at night, dark out... and she just looks back at me...Then I hear a coyote cry. They are relentless when Cassie is in heat or whelping or if we have young puppies here at the kennel.... for the whole 6 months off and on they come on the property and try to lure her out. I needed to fill the furnace for the night and had to go out back and in the dark and with coyotes howling no more than 1000 feet away...I took my shot gun, fired some shots in the air (sorry neighbours), but they didnt stop. So out comes me on the tractor and I head out back with the lights on to figure out where they are because by this point, there is more than one calling. Im thinking the noise of the tractor will chase them off but once I cut the engine and sat with the lights on...they continued. Then all of a sudden I see Brady loping past me going towards the house...what on earth is he out for??? He was supposed to come in when we came home this evening but he was out playing with his block of wood and so happy I didnt have the heart to lock him up...he never runs off so he has full privileges to roam our property....the coyotes usually stay away when he is loose.... thank God I didnt shoot low into the dark. Brady can hardly run, winded and gasping for air, tongue hanging to his toes, he makes his way back to me...I have never seen him that tired. My guess is that they were teasing him and he would chase one, then the other would come up to him calling, and he would chase that one. They had him so tired that if Beckett hadnt barked, it would have only been a matter of 20 mins if that, and he would have been supper for them and all Brady thought it was...a great game of chase the coyotes. I always thought he could take them on if it came down to it because of his size.... 120 lbs of solid, fearless GSD but I have learned tonight, never under estimate wild life, some play to kill, to survive, and they would have outsmarted him. So while he was behind the tractor trying to catch his breath with his tongue still hanging out, a coyote took off across the field and I took a shot at him, he was about 900 feet away....Ill check tomorrow if I hit him. I was more worried about Brady by this point and didnt want to put myself in the middle of a coyote pack... turns out he is just going to sleep really well tonight, not a scratch on him, but he wont be allowed out after dark anymore, the coyotes have stolen his freedom, but not his life. This is a brazen pack, Bradys presence alone usually deters them and also the sound of a vehicle would chase them off, but not even the tractor and the lights scared them away tonight which is concerning. If they decide I look yummy for supper than I would speculate rabies and for that, they can have dinner with my shot gun. I dont like shooting wildlife but if they start creeping bravely onto our property and are a threat to my kids and dogs, Ill have to do something.
