I have always had a problem with history since most of it is about powerful people behaving badly - and I have no great interest in them. I am interesting in the little voiceless people who carry history on their backs. I trained as an architect and discovered history of architecture. it is about people making things. the greatest mosques cathedrals palaces are built by little people stonemasons carpenters tilers glassworkers laborers. we dont know the name of the architects of the great buildings - or the building contractors. they were without voice - but they conducted the orchestra. so I learned to look at the great old building of the past and listen to the whisperd voices of the people who labored over them. we dont know the name of the architects of the great buildings - or the bullding contractors. they were without voice - but they conducted the orchestra. And colour like I have never seen in a mosque.
