I have always wondered that since Belizeans seem to have such a wonderful sense of humor and like to laugh, how come we dont have stand up comics. Oh, weve had a few give it a try but none has really broken through and had folks rolling on the floor in laughter (or as they say, rolfl). I think I might have stumbled on the reason. We are quite touchies and thin skinned and take some things a bit too personal. Maybe its because I spent a lot of time in the US where they find humor in every situation. Im a fan of Bill Maher and before him George Carlin. These guys make fun of everything, including the president and serious issues like the missing plane. Late night show host like Johnny Carson and Jay Leno each night used to poke fun at some very touchy issues. Well, I was watching Plus TV last week and saw an ad that I have been seeing and find very funny. Folks stop a little boy on a bike and ask where they can find a wide range of stuff from gasoline to lumber to grocery and quite a few other stuff. Each time his answer would be, right over there at Tonys Store. And Im thinking, wow, they sell everything. My friends on facebook know that I like to joke around. Although I have been through some rough times lately, I try to lighten things up with a joke here and there and funny comments in response to posts from friends. I dont seek company for my misery and really try to stay on the lighter side of issues. Well, I posted a short comment poking fun at the ad. I am now bombarded with comments from the family who owns the store. Now I know a few members of this family and have high regard for the ones I know. There was no disrespect meant, it was a joke for crying out loud! I hate to be in an environment where I feel like I need to walk on egg shells. Seriously, help me out here, was I that wrong. Be honest, I can take it and I will know if I need to offer a public apology. As it is, I do regret that they took offense but I am still confused. Who needs to lighten up, me or them?
