I have been dying to get out of town, so when I signed up for a burrowing owl photography workshop in Bakersfield, I decided to make an adventure of it by going up a day early to do some milky way photography. Checking my dark sky map for the Bakersfield area, I decided to go to Piute Peak, which looked like an easy drive on Google Maps. It started out easy, going off the highway onto a two-lane paved road on which free-ranging cattle were walking, sleeping and pooping. Then the road turned off onto a graded dirt road, and I thought, okay, Google is still giving me directions so Im fine. As I get near the top of the peak and my wheels are spinning dirt everywhere, unable to get much traction, I just keep on until I get to the top. It was gorgeous up there, lots of trees, many victims of fire, but full of little birds. I had no phone service up there and it dawned on me that if something had happened, nobody would even know where to look for me. In the future, I will try to be more prepared than just carrying bug spray and pepper spray. But things worked out well, so Im happy.
