I have been in Bali for almost three weeks now. So much has changed since I last visited in 1989. Yet, the essence of the culture continues - the smiles of the welcoming people, the prevalence of the arts, the temple offerings and ceremonies that are so much a part of daily life. I am so happy that I came back to Bali as a student. I am studying Balinese dance and music (gamelan) and through the interaction with the teachers and artists at Cudamani, I am also learning so much more. I am able to ask about what I see happening around me and at events that we attend. Through this I am gaining a deeper understanding of the life and culture of the Balinese. Today we are playing gamelan at a wedding at the family compound. Last night we performed at a temple ceremony in Tunjuk. So many amazing experiences along with the traffic, bug bites, rain, lack of sleep...It is all part of the balance that the Balinese prize.
