I have been informed by the Town Clerk, Jane Czornij, that she has received a written reply to the Councils letter to the College of Arms from the Windsor Herald, William G Hunt. Whilst I have not seen the contents of the letter, I can only assume that he will have confirmed that Glastonbury Town Council has no rights to use a coat-of-arms, and that the use of Queen Annes arms above the shield in the position of a crest is prohibited. I will post the contents of the letter on this page once it has been received by the Councils Heraldry Committee at their next meeting. (the date and time of which I will let you all know, as it will be a public meeting). In the meantime, in response to the insinuation by a certain Councillor that the correspondence between members of the Heraldry Working Group (myself and Dan Salter) and the Windsor Herald were somehow irrelevant - or even false - I would like to post a copy of this email that the Windsor Herald sent to me on 19 November 2013, outlining the offence concerning the use of Royal Arms. Dear Mr Cousins, Thank you for your e-mail of 15 November. I am sorry that the Mayor and Council have reacted in the way that they have done. Whilst it is an offence to use the Royal Arms, we have no public funding and are therefore not going to take action against the Council. Organisations wishing to use the Royal Arms or a Royal Crown have to seek permission from the Lord Chamberlain’s Office at Buckingham, Palace or from the Home Secretary. I cannot see Buckingham Palace wishing to sue an elected body and the Home Secretary is not going to bother. It might even embarrass the Royal family if one were to take action. It is sad that your Council cannot show respect or set an example. Yours sincerely, William Hunt Windsor Herald College of Arms 130 Queen Victoria Street London EC4V 4BT
