I have been thinking awhile about what to write about Aslam. What words are sufficient to sum up this guy and how I felt about him? .We all complain about our friend’s character flaws. With Aslam I just could never think of any. Aslam did tease a lot but I always knew that he only teased people for whom he had great affection. He also had wit and intellect unrivalled. I was a bit of a class clown and could always make people laugh by acting like a goof but the witty part of my sense of humour was borrowed in large part from him. He always had a way of making everyone feel valued and important. His concern for others well being was so very genuine. I always felt bad because when ever we saw each other he had so many questions about friends back home. Questions I rarely had answers to. Aslam was the exact opposite of self absorbed, I believe he would set the bar in this regard compared to any other person I have ever known. When I had the chance to visit him in Toronto he pulled out all of the stops to show me good time while I was there. We went to his favourite Sushi place and when we walked in the joint he was greeted by the chefs as if he was a celebrity. They even pulled hisown pair of chopsticks down off the wall. That was the effect the man had on people. He seemed to know everyone and everyone sure as hell knew who he was. I have many cherished memories of Aslam and his family, his mother, father, my visit to Toronto, on line conversations and getting to meet his beautiful family. This would get pretty lengthy if I were to try to write them here. What can one take away from such a thing? Lessons about how fragile we are and to cherish your loved ones come to mind. Maybe this is something we can all do better. I’ll stick to the opinion that the world was a far better place with him in it. I’m just sad he is gone……..heartbroken.
