I have been watching this lovely performance of Magic Flute from Paris. It is one of the best sung performances of this opera I have seen (heard in some time) - Matti Salminen is in this and always amazing and it is so nice to hear a bass who can actually sing those low notes. Natalie Dessay is the Queen and does a good job. Piotr Beczala is a terrific Tamino and Dorothea Röschmann is a wonderful Pamina. Also, if you like your productions of Magic Flute traditional, this is the production for you. It is probably the most traditional production of this opera I have seen in ages. That said, it is dramatically somewhat static. Pretty much - enter - stand and sing. Piotr and Dorothea try to infuse some character but I dont think they had much help from the director. Still it is delightful and a nice opera for the week between Christmas and New Year. Still, my favorite production that I have seen recently is by far the Aix-en-Provence production.
